Comparing Games

2D and 3D refer to the actual dimensions in a computer workspace. 2D is flat only using the horizontal and vertical dimensions, the image has only two dimensions and if turned to the side becomes a line. 3D adds the depth dimension. This third dimension allows for rotation and visualise from multiple perspectives. It is essentially the difference between a photo and a sculpture.

2D Games

Flappy Birds

Flappy Birds is a simplistic 2D game played on mobile and the internet. It is a side-scrolling mobile game. Flappy Birds was created by a independent developer named Nguyễn Hà Đông. The developer designed the game within several days as he per created the sprite that is the bird. The aim of the game is to get the bird through the pipes without touching them as he will die. After starting the game if you leave the bird and don't do anything the bird will simultaneously fall to the ground. To stop this from happening you have tap the screen in order to make him fly upwards. A mixture of letting him fall and tapping the screen to make him fly up can make him fly through the pipes. Flappy Birds uses simple graphic designs and later got penalized for using similar pipes to ones used in Mario. This later resulted in Flappy getting taken down from Apple's App store and Google Play. At its peak Flappy Birds was earning the developer $50,000 per day through app-advertisements.

Shopping Cart Hero

Shopping Cart Hero is a 2D game played on both mobile and the internet. It is a side-scrolling mobile game. The idea of the game is a stickman is in a shopping and he goes down the hill and jumps at the end trying to get as far as possible, you have to land the fall as well. To start off you need to swipe the screen in order to push the shopping cart down the hill. At the mid-way point you have to tap the screen enabling a power bar. At the end of the hill approaching the jump you have to tap the screen again enabling another power bar. This will then launch him off the jump and you have to get as far as possible to achieve the objective of the game. To land you have to tilt your phone so that the shopping cart is parallel to the ground enabling the shopping cart to land. The further you get the more credits you get for getting upgrades allowing you to go further in the jumps. The developers went on to make Shopping Cart Hero 2 and 3.

3D Games

Fifa 15

Fifa 15 is a 3D sports game played on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC. The aim of the game is a realistic football game that you can play multiple game modes on. For example you can play Ultimate Team where you build your ultimate squad and play against others other online to show whose team is better. Then you can do a Career Mode, this is where you can simulate season with team of your choice, making transfers and playing games trying to make your team the best in the world. The controls are simplistic so that anybody can play them. The Pegi rating for Fifa 15 is 3+. EA Sports have published the game. They have also made all the stadiums in the Barclays Premier League and most of the Premier League players faces as well. They have also produced Fifa series for a very long.

Forza Horizon 2

Forza Horizon 2 is a 3D racing game played on Xbox 360 and Xbox One. The game is an Open World racing game. The game has great graphics with jaw dropping mountains and superb winding roads to enjoy racing through the country roads of France and Italy. The game has a campaign in which you can do races to earn money, get better cars and race some more. You can also race online against others and compete in races showing who the best is. You can also do mini games such, King and Infected. Furthermore you can go to Online car meets where you can see other people’s cars and buy them if you wanted it that bad. Playground games also produced Forza Horizon the original.

Digital Graphics For Computer Games

Artistic Styles

What are artistic styles?

There are different artistic styles in video games. In other words its the type of gaming graphics used in the game to present the type of game it is. For example, the developers of a game may want the game to be realistic or they may want it to be cartoon like.

Cel-Shaded

Cel-shading is a non-photorealistic rendering style making the video game graphics appear hand drawn or cartoony. This style is generally used in Japanese developed games. This style is quite new. The first cel-shaded computer game came out in the twenty-first century. In comparison to other games, it has a very simplistic style. In these games, the game is most-likely based on a comic book that previously came out before the game was even thought of. The ways of telling that it is a cel-shaded game is that it has feint outlines around each object in the game. Bright vibrant colours is another stereotype of cel-shaded games. Examples of cel-shaded games are, Dragonball Z, Naruto and Afro Samurai.

Photorealism

In photorealism games the game developers try to emulate a realistic game with 3D mesh, whether its fictional or nonfictional. This is tremendously hard to make and requires a highly skilled artist to get the scaling, textures, models and various other things to get the art side if the video game correct. It is also very time consuming. It requires powerful hardware to render the finished product. One of the reasons to why developers use photorealism is to simulate a cinematic realistic experience for the gamer. Examples of games that use this style are, Crysis 3, Max Payne and GTA.

Exaggerated

Exaggerated games are kind of based on photorealism games. The arts that are produced in the game are realistic but have been enhanced and heavily done to make it exaggerated. There are a lot of Japanese developed games that use the exaggerated visual style to make their games interesting to their target audience. One example of this is Tekken. Tekken includes many exaggerated fighting moves, weapons and even hairstyles. Some western games use exaggerated visual style including Batman: Arkham City and Devil May Cry.

Abstract

This is probably one of the most unique visual styles of gaming. This style is nothing in comparison to others, meaning they are nothing alike. They are usually made up of geometrical shapes and generally don't acquire much skill when playing them. A typical abstract game would use vivid colours although some do use subtle colours to make you feel relaxed. Examples of abstract games are Tetris, Child of Eden and Katamari series.

Military

There are many examples of video games that have a military visual style. In a typical military game it will be in first person and will simulate a realistic simulation of what is like to fight on a battlefield. In many ways military games are similar to photo-realism although it has its own separate category because of how unique it is in textures wise. You know when you’re playing a military game, mostly likely because the textures stand out to their own unique style. Examples of military games are Call of Duty series and Battlefield series.

Rockstar

Rockstar have their own unique visual style in computer games. For example the textures in their games are very similar and once you have played one they all become the same underneath. For example, Max Payne 3 have similarities to their GTA series. All of their games involve crime and have a similar style whilst playing them. Rockstar are a well-like company that make games such as GTA series, Max Payne series, Red Dead series, Bully series and LA Noire.

2 Dimensional

A 2D game is very simplistic. Usually they don't really take much skill, although they can still be as fun and addicting to any other game. Furthermore 2D games don't really have going on in the way of what you can do. Some if the first games created are 2D, for example Pong and Space invaders which were hugely popular when they first cam out.

Computer Games Graphics

Pixel Art

Pixel art is a form of something called digital art. Graphics in old computer/video games use pixel art. This is created through the use of raster graphics software.

Concept Art

Concept art is a form of illustration used to plan ideas mostly used in films and video games. This is done before putting the art into the final game. Concept art is also known Visual Development.

Texture Art

In the visual arts, texture is the quality of a work of art. It is an element of two-dimensional and three-dimensional designs and is distinguished by its visual and physical properties. Use of texture, along with other elements of design, can determine a variety of messages and emotions.

Background Graphics

Background graphics are the graphics that are in the background to make the game feel like it is set in a certain place. For example this could be walls, trees, clouds, etc.

In-Game Interface

In-Game interface is basically the menus in between playing the game. For example when starting a game more than likely you will be set with a menu which is an in-game interface. When pausing the game this will also occur.

Print Media Art

Print media are lightweight, portable, disposable documents printed on paper and reproduced as physical copies in forms we call books, newspapers, magazines and newsletters. They include informative and entertaining content that is of interest to the person reading it.

Pixel

The term "pixel" is actually short for "Picture Element." These small little dots are what make up the images on computer displays. There thousands or even millions of pixels that make up a display. Usually you will not be able to see the individual pixels because they are so small. This is a good thing, because most people prefer to look at smooth, clear images rather than blocky.
Each pixel can only be one colour at a time. However, since they are so small, pixels often blend together to form various shades and blends of colours.

Types of Digital Graphics

TIFF (also known as TIF), file types ending in .tif

TIFF stands for Tagged Image File Format. TIFF images create very large file sizes. TIFF images are uncompressed and therefore contain a lot of detailed image data.

JPEG (also known as JPG), file types ending in .jpg

JPEG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group. JPEG files are images that have been compressed to store a lot of information in a small-size file.

GIF, file types ending in .gif

GIF stands for Graphic Interchange Format. This format compresses images but, as different from JPEG, the compression is lossless.

PNG, file types ending in .png

PNG stands for Portable Network Graphics. It was created as an open format to replace GIF. It allows for a full range of colour and better compression.

Raw image files

Raw image files contain data from a digital camera. The files are called raw because they haven’t been processed and therefore can’t be edited or printed yet.

File Extensions

A file extension is a string of characters attached to a file name. For example .PNG is something that may be attached to a file.

Compression

Compressing a file is making the file smaller to fit requirements of the file not being too big. For example, you may make the compress a file is wanting to transfer the file somewhere else so it wasn’t too big.

Image Capture

An image capture is some sort of device that lets you record or take images. For example this may be a camera. You may need to use this when creating a game to get an idea of what a specific place may look like.

Optimizing

This is when you save a file with the correct file extension for example you may save a file as .PNG.

Gaming Ethics

Gaming Ethics

Impact of computer games on society?

Games in society: concerns such as excess playing time, social isolation, cost, separation from reality, education; benefits (hand-eye coordination, brain training), thinking and strategy skills, future impact, impact on 'mainstream' application development.

Psychological factors: effects e.g. use of sound, high score listings, competitive games, peer pressure, fun, educational value, expectations and levelling.

- Games In Society

Excess Playing Time

A lot of gamers play for longer than the advised time for playing computer games (which is around 2 hours per day). But why is this? Is this normal? and does this have more benefits or negatives? Well as a teenager myself the current generation are surrounded by computer games whether that be on there phones, computers or modern day consoles such as Xbox 360 and PS3 and Xbox One and PS4. Gaming is very addictive is very addictive and once you have started it is very hard to stop for the simple reasons below. After doing research I found that many people play computer games for longer than they should but this has social and psychological benefits although they also have their negatives.

A male playing a computer game for an excess amount of time.

Social Isolation

When playing computer games for an access period of time, gamers sometimes go into social isolation. This where they don't want to do anything other than play computer games. This can be a huge negative as your social life will be hugely effect your lifestyle and could effect your relationship with friends and family. Social Isolation can include staying home for days or even weeks due to addiction of playing computer games. Some people may not even interact with their family that they live with, just isolating themselves to them themselves in the virtual game.

A man in a bubble, representing social isolation.

Cost

The cost excessive gaming costs you is massive. Not just cost in money, but the cost in money can be a lot from constantly wanting new games, but the cost in your body as well. For example when playing games for a very long time your body becomes physically un fit. For example, if a hardcore gamer tries to walk somewhere after a long gaming session they are more likely to get out of breath. Furthermore your eyes may become damage from long periods of gaming.

Separation From Reality

Gamers that play so much can have separation from reality, for example they treat life differently as if they are still playing in a virtual game. There have been extreme cases of this where people have forgot they are not playing GTA and have went out stealing cars and shooting people.

Education

Some games have been designed so that when you play them you gain education from playing. This is a good way for gamers to learn as they are playing games and still learning rather than putting pen to paper. Games that do this are games like brain tests on the Nintendo DS, as they give you a test to do and you can see your improvements, effectively making you more clever. Some people say that gaming has also helped them with their hand-eye coordination as well. For example a man said that whilst he was driving a car he missed an accident because his reactions were better because he had being playing computer games.

Thinking And Strategy Skills

Games that make the gamer make rash and quick decision help the gamer make better decisions in real life and they have been put in that position before and seen how it has played out so therefore can benefit off of it.

Future Impact

There are lots of job opportunities in gaming, it is a fast growing market with technology always getting better. Therefore it isn't a bad industry to go into. So the future impact of gaming hard now could benefit you in the future of getting a gaming job on good pay.

Impact On 'Mainstream' Application Development

Game developers are constantly looking for idea's for gaming so that everything new is original and everybody wants to buy it. For example when the Nintendo Wii came out it was original because of the sensor's and everybody wanted one to experience the gaming concept. But as generations move more people develop these types of sensors were used in other technology such as in the Xbox with the Kinect.

- Psychological Factors

Use Of Sound

Sounds in games are vital. This is because they need to create the right atmosphere that the developer wants. For example in a fight scene the developers need to create tension, they would do this by trying to select the right music to do so. So sound can really be a make or break of a game.

High Score Listings

When playing games with friends, you are constantly competitive and wanting to beat them. Therefore high score listings are a great addition to a game. You can see their high score and you can beat them and you can see it. However when somebody beats you, you will always want to play to be constantly beating your friends.

Peer Pressure

Peer pressure is all around us. When your friend buys a game, you may not even want the game, but the fact they have it and you want to be playing with them you buy even though you might not even know anything about the game, for example I brought NBA 2K14 because my cousin got it, I didn't even know any rules about basketball.

Leveling

Games which involve levels are highly addictive, for example you are constantly wanting to get higher levels in the game, to beat your friends. Before you know it you want to be leveling up to gain higher equipment for the game unlocking new things and getting higher in the leaderboards of levels.

Pre-Production

Pre-Production

What is Pre-Production?

Pre-production is planning before making a product. However this is not just used in games design it is used in many other media production. Examples of media that use pre-production is film, television,  advertising (photo-imaging, cinema, television and print, etc.), games development, internet, radio, press, interactive media and print.

Finance

When companies begin to plan making a game they usual come up with a budget so that they know what they can spend and they have a rough idea of what they are going to spend the money on. These types of things may be equipment such as PC's, consoles, software, sound and motion captures, facilities, employees, etc. When making a game transport is important. For instance if you want to sell your game to everyone then you will need to travel all around to advertise your game to everybody involved. Furthermore you may have multiple locations in facilities to travel to, this obviously cost money, so companies need to take that into consideration. If an employee is highly talented at their job, then the company will have to pay that employee an substantial wage in order to maintain them within their company. To gather a crew together to make a game will cost money, in wages, bonuses etc. A real-life example of a company making a profit is Rockstar making GTA 5 for a combined cost of £170 million. This is taking everything into consideration.
Rockstar's GTA 5 in action.

Time

Similar to making a budget in finance, with time you have to make a deadline to when you are going to get your work done by. The reasoning for this is so that everything is done efficiently and everybody is working to get something done by a certain time. When setting a deadline companies would need to consider the availability of equipment, this could be for example when they are using a computer what if that computer breaks down. They would need to consider this to make sure that they don't go over. They would also need to availability of personnel for example if somebody gets ill and is unable to attend the company may take longer to produce something. This would then add to the deadline date. An example of deadline in real-life not working is when GTA was originally supposed to be released in March 2013 but was delayed because of most likely one of the reasons above to September 2013.
GTA 5 front cover.

Personnel

It is very important that when a company employees a team they employee the right amount of people so that the company doesn't get too big or cost too much to run. When employing people the company that is employing has to consider what roles they need to employ. For example they don't need to employ more of something they need, this would cost them way too much which would then go over their budget. When they employee somebody they are looking at the have to consider what skills they have and how they would develop the company to grow accordingly to how they want, to succeed in making their game. Again they would have to consider the availability of the people they are employing, for example if they need some time off they need to have back up of people to replace that person. Finally they would have to take in account the cost of wages of that person so that they don't go over their budget.
Employment

Facilities

A company would need to either hire or buy a property the right property so that the company has the required space needed so that all of their workers/employees can work on their game successfully. At this place of work they would have to have work space that would have PC's, sound and motion captures and many other things such as green screens. So it is important that they buy or hire the right property. As well as making the game, they would also have to produce the game and sell it. So they have to buy or hire the right property in order to produce the game as well, this is mass production of the product that they are producing. Furthermore the accessibility of the property must be good as well so that all the employees can get there easily and quickly so that the product/game can be made successfully. Turn 10 studio's have a facility in where pretty much everything is done in one building.
Behind the scenes at Turn 10 Studios and the making of Forza Motorsport 4
The Turn 10 studio's.

Contributors

When creating a game you might want a celebrity to promote or be in the game. This would be a well liked celebrity so that the game would get more publicity. This would essentially sell more copies of the game because of the fan base of that celebrity might also buy the game along with people/gamers that generally buy that genre of game frequently. A real-life example of this is Ellen Page when she featured in Beyond Two Souls. Because of her act in the game the game became more known publically and sold more copies than it expected to.
Ellen Page in her sequel of games.

Locations

For a company when choosing a location for a company, the company will need assess whether the location is suitable for everybody at the business. For example, if you picked a location in Scotland and most of their employees lived in London this wouldn't be suitable for everybody to take a journey to Scotland everyday. So the company need to think logically about where they are to locate. The company might want to travel around to take inspiration from locations for their game. For example a British company may travel to America to get inspiration for a game they were creating that was set in America. However this doesn't always go as planned, for example the weather may not be what they want. This then may take longer than planned to capture what they wanted from that location. For example The Crew design the base of their map is the whole of America with real landmarks placed in real places.

Codes Of Practice And Regulation

Having created a game the company would have to go through stages of signing legal documents so that there is proof of no copyright infringements. Legal codes of practice will cover any injuries to the general public, as long as there was a risk assessment before the injury had taken place. Furthermore completion insurance which is used in independence financial productions. This guarantees the producer will deliver the product to the distributor and the money will then be transferred to the producer from the distributor.

OFCOM
This stands for Office of Communication. This looks after TV, Radio, Mobiles, Postal Service and Telecoms. They protect the public from harmful content shown own on such things as above.

ASA
This stands for Advertising Standards Authority. Their job is to analyze all advertisement before it is shown to the public, to stop any offensive content that could be shown. If the advertisement even receives just on bad complaint the advert pulled out of the publics view and goes into investigation.

ESRB
This stands for Entertainment Software Rating Board. This is the American and Canadian version PEGI. They play and rate all games before they are released to the public to buy to decide on an age rating. An example would be if the game includes bad language it will likely be at least an 12+. Furthermore if a game is violent and contains drugs or sexual content it is most likely going to be an 18+.

PEGI
This stands for Pan European Game Information. This is the European equivalent to ESRB. They rate games in a similar way to ESRB. They decide on a age rating, depending on violence level or graphical content.

Pre-Production in a Maze Game

What Particular Pre-Production Requirements Will You Need For Wayne's Maze Game?

Software

The software I am going to use for Wayne's Maze game was Game Maker. In Game Maker I am going to develop my initial spites. I am going to further develop my sprites on Photoshop, this is because Photoshop can be more accurate and have a more quality finish to my designs. Furthermore I am going to use Game Maker to create rooms. These rooms are for each level of my game. After my sprites and my rooms are created I am going to use Game Maker to program my game to work. With both Photoshop and Game Maker combined I am going to create a fully working maze game. To create a draft for the maze game I am going to use Paint which is a free program which is pre-installed with Windows. All of this software is currently free for me, however if I was going to make this game professionally I would need to buy these so that the game could be produced with the best possible equipment possible.
Game-Maker-Logo

Facilities

I am going to create this game in college at South Leicestershire College. At SLC I have access to all of the software I need to create the game for free. If however I was creating this game seriously I would have to hire a facility substantial to my needs in creating my maze game. To hire facilities would cost a lot of money and this would have to added to my budget. Furthermore the software will no longer be free. Therefore I would need to buy the software needed to create my maze game.

Time

To make a game productively I will need to make a deadline so that my game doesn't become too long in the making. My estimated time to make the game is about 2-3 weeks. This will include planning, programming, and developing. However if I was making the game professionally I would not set the deadline until a distributor told me when they want the game by. There and then I would decide a set deadline for the game so that the distributor could get the game on time and they could sell the game for me.

Crew

I am the only developer in my game development. I am responsible for the graphics, programming, planning and development. The deadline is set on the purpose that I am a sole developer. If I had a few people helping me in certain areas the deadline wouldn't be as long. If I was professionally making the maze game I wouldn't be the sole developer of the game. I would hire people to help me produce the game so that the game could be the best of its ability.

Finance

If I created my game at home I would need to set a budget. This is because I would need to buy all of the programs and software needed or order to develop the game. These programs would include Photoshop, Game Maker and a PC capable of creating these games. Adobe Photoshop costs around £330. Game Maker costs around £560. For the PC capable of creating these games would most likely cost over £1000. The budget would probably be around £2000. This would enable me to work at home on making this game so that the deadline could become a lot shorter. Plus I would have more time making things more perfect outside of college.

Copyright And Rules And Regulations

When I am creating my game if I use an image off of Google I will need to check whether these have been copyrighted. If so I wont be able to use that image as it will be illegal and I could be prosecuted if I did so. However I could ask for permission to use the image and acceptance may be granted. If I was professionally publishing this game for people to pay and play this game I would check if the game meets the rules and regulations for the PEGI rating given, so that it is appropriate for everybody to play. Due to copyright you can not use published songs for sound without permission. Therefore free options are a better solution. For instance Audio Blocks is a website where you can sign and get non-copyrighted sounds so that it is legal. At this moment in I do not need a PEGI rating, however if was creating the game professionally and I sold it for money to people I would need to give it a PEGI rating.
